How meditation can help you become more productive at work
Meditation comes in many forms, but the goal is always the same - calm and clear the mind.
One problem a lot of people face when starting meditation is maintaining motivation, when you meditate it is relaxing but it is essentially sitting still and doing nothing, as humans we find this hard to do, we associate this with being unproductive, and we as humans hate being unproductive. But in fact stopping that thought pattern is what makes meditation so effective. Let’s look at how meditation can help you cope with the stress of life.
What if I told you meditation actually makes you more productive?
One study on the effectiveness of meditation in improving job performance concluded that meditation had a positive effect on enhancing performance in areas of work engagement, subjective job performance, and job satisfaction. This is one study that shows how meditation can help enhance your career success, but there are hundreds of other studies that show the benefits meditation can have on nearly all aspects of your life.
How to mediate. Keeping it simple.
Let’s just keep it simple, when you start something new like meditation don’t overwhelm yourself with the meaning behind what or why you are doing it, just simply do, feel it out and see what works for you. Here’s 3 simple steps to get you started.
Simply sit down and close your eyes. Find a space that is comfortable, you could even lay down comfortably in bed. When you are comfortable, close your eyes and relax.
Don’t think of the time. Wether you sit for 1 minute or 30 minutes don’t judge yourself. Just see where your mind goes, see how long you feel comfortable in your meditative space. Some like to think of sitting in a bubble, there is only you in this bubble, no outside world, nothing else….it is your space.
Clear your mind. This really isn’t as easy as it sounds. When you first start meditating you will notice thoughts drift in unintentionally. Don’t judge, simply drift them back out when you notice them. Try visualising a cloud moving them back out of your mind. With practice and time your mind will become better at maintaining a state of clarity without so much effort.
Meditation as with any new practice requires time to master, and even if you never become the master you were wishing to become, do not judge yourself. You put the time and love into your own self development and that’s an admirable step, a step most are very fearful to take.
